Companions Real Bread
Food & Drink

Did you know that through the simple act of treating yourself to quality bread you can become part of a transformational story? Our genuine sourdough is made slowly over two days, allowing plenty of time for lactic acid bacteria to develop. These work to reduce the phytic acid and allow access to micronutrients in the grain, and to partially digest the gluten. Research suggests this bread is more nutritious, more digestible than the industrial loaf, and helps boost immunity through supporting the microbiome.

Companions Bakery (based in The Gallery, Bedford) was set up as a not-for-profit in 2016 specifically to help ex-offenders trying to resettle into our local community. We all make mistakes, and however much we might regret them, their impact on our lives can continue long after we’ve suffered the punishment, whatever that might be.

97% of prisoners say that, along with finding somewhere to live, getting a job is the thing most likely to help them stay out of trouble, but the odds are heavily stacked against them. However much they may want to ‘give back’, many have few qualifications and little or no work experience.

More than 40 ex-offenders have now worked and trained with us. As part of a team of positive people, they discover their skills, grow in confidence and begin to feel that the future might after all hold some promise.  Indeed,38% of them have moved forward into paid employment. Buying our bread supports them, as well as your health.

Order your bread online and choose a local pick-up point.

If you want to try our bread, or buy occasionally, you can place an order before midnight on a Sunday, and choose to collect from a pick-up point in Kempston, Stagsden, Odell, Felmersham, Sharnbrook or Renhold. A subscription is best for a regular order. All the information you need is at www.companionsrealbread.uk/buying-from-us. Thank you for your support!
