SUMMER WALK – THE SCOTTISH SOLDIERS

Bedford-born Richard Galley is a local historian (and bagpiper!) who has spent many years researching the story of the Scottish Highland Division’s friendly occupation of Bedford in the first nine months of World War One.
In this walk, Richard will lead you through the inspirational story of Bedford’s response to the influx of 17,000 Highland Division soldiers over one weekend in August 1914, paying close attention to the Highlander’s graves located in the cemetery, most (but not all) due to the impact of disease on the Scots during the winter of 1914/15.
After the walk Richard will be available to chat to you over a cup of tea in the chapel. Meet at the Chapel 10 mins before the start of the walk.
This event is free but a small contribution to the Friends would be welcome.
(Please note: The cemetery ground is uneven so please wear appropriate shoes. When viewing memorials, please do not lean on them.)
