As you would expect in such a multi-cultural and diverse town, Bedford has many churches, mosques, temples, chapels and synagogues. Two of the most iconic landmarks in Bedford are St Paul’s church, with it’s famous tall spire, and the Guru Nanak Gurdwara, the largest Sikh temple outside London.

HISTORIC BUILDINGS

After release from prison, John Bunyan needed somewhere to meet as he was a Pastor of the Independent Congregation. His friend offered him the barn and orchard on Mill Street which became the Bunyan Free Meeting House.A church was constructed on the site in 1707 and the Meeting House stands on the same site today.

Guru Nanak Gurdwara Sikh Temple

GuruNanakGurdwara.pngThe building on Ford End Road, Queens Park, Bedford is the largest Sikh temple in the UK outside London. After five years of planning and three years of building, the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Ford End Road, Queens Park, opened in April 2007 amid a vibrant ceremony of celebration and colour. Granite and marble, which clad the outside, were imported from western India – along with 20 stonemasons who worked for a year-and-a half crafting the stunning exterior. The building, which can accommodate 600 worshippers, was a mammoth undertaking.

The Gurdwara is part of a 2.5-acre complex, complete with community centre and kitchens which can cater for up to 500 for celebrations such as weddings. And what we are finding now is that young Sikhs are far more enthusiastic when it comes to learning about their religion because they enjoy coming to the temple and community centre. Classes are taught here and we give
a place for youngsters to go and do something constructive with their time, whether it be to learn judo or play football.

Jamia Masjid Gulshani Mosque

JamiaMasjidGulshaniMosque.pngJamia Masjid Gulshan-E-Baghdad is a purpose built mosque completed in 2001, through the generosity and hard work of the Queens Park community. It has a capacity of approx 1200 people. It is one of the recognised religious buildings in Queens Park and as a result, a vast number of people visit the mosque every year.
We receive a large number of visitors from schools, colleges, universities and other institutions wishing to find out more about a mosque and the Islamic faith for projects and studies. Jamia Masjid Gulshan-E-Baghdad is open to visitors throughout the year.
