Stay Safe with New National Guidance

As you will have seen, over the last few days the Government has issued new guidance, asking people to ‘Stay Alert, Control the Virus, Save Lives’.

Published on: 13/5/20, 8:17 pm

From today, there are a number of things you can now do including:

- spend time outdoors – for example sitting and enjoying the fresh air, picnicking, or sunbathing

- meet one other person from a different household outdoors - following social distancing guidelines

- exercise outdoors as often as you wish - following social distancing guidelines

- use outdoor sports courts or facilities– with members of your household, or one other person while staying 2 metres apart

Here in Bedford Borough, the basketball courts and tennis courts have reopened, with nets in place at every other court to help people keep their distance. Children’s play areas will remain closed at this time.

There are 2 metre markers at the Embankment and parks to help people keep their distance while out exercising.

The Government has produced a list of FAQs about this guidance, which may help answer any queries you have. Visit for more information.

But, it is still very important that you stay at home as much as possible. The reasons you may leave home include going to work- where you cannot work from home, going to shops to get things like food and medicine, to exercise or spend time outdoors, and any medical need.

Even when doing these activities, you should be minimising time spent away from the home and ensuring that you are 2 metres apart from anyone outside of your household.

Everyone is reminded to please continue act responsibly, keep your distance when in public, and most importantly to stay at home as much as possible to slow the spread of the virus.
