Great Barford Bowls Club was founded in 1940, when the local vicar gave his tennis court to the village to create a Bowls Green for the benefit of the residents and others nearby. The club is in its 75 th year and is in the throes of arranging a special celebration.
We are a private club, a member of Bowls England, and locally Bowls Bedfordshire. The club participates in many friendly and league games, including County matches, East Beds League, and an Over Sixties League. A full committee operates; it meets every month to discuss business matters. We have the usual officer appointments, President, Chairman, a Treasurer, Secretary, Social Committee etc.
We have a first-class pavilion, approached from Woodpecker Close, Great Barford. It is a brick-built building with the usual facilities, including comfortable pavilion, modern kitchen, changing rooms, bar etc. In recent years the club was given additional land to extend the green to six rinks, and to build a sizeable car park, all the improvements have been completed. The whole area is very pleasant, with surrounding gardens, etc.
The Club operates Men / Ladies / Mixed matches, the season runs from April through to September. A full programme is always arranged with other clubs, and a printed programme is available to all members at the beginning of the season. We play matches weekends, during the week and sometimes in the evenings. Refreshments are always provided at end of matches. The green is available to all members for. “Roll-ups” usually held on a Friday evening, this event is known as Club Night. This facility is to encourage new and existing members to improve their game and socialize with club members. . Compared with many other clubs, our fees are moderate.
As an adjunct to bowls, a Petanque (French boules) group has been formed. It has become a well-supported new sport at the club and the group has already made its presence felt in the 3 Shires Petanque league. Practice takes place on a Sunday morning at 10.30 am.
Competitions are held during the year for various Trophies, men and women participate. At the end of the season, in October, we have a celebratory award dinner in the pavilion to present trophies to winning members. This is a very prestigious event, members and friends attending.
During the closed season, we hold social evenings taking the form of Games nights and Quizzes; in addition we hold Coffee mornings twice a year, Spring and Autumn. We have formed a popular Whist Club. All these events are open to members, friends and local residents from Great Barford and nearby areas.
Mention has been made earlier in the article that the Club is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year. The committee have decided to hold a Garden Party at the club on Sunday 7 June. Details are available from the writer, those interested to join us would be very welcome.
More information about the club can be obtained from the secretary or try our website. www.greatbarfordbowlsclub.org.uk.
We are a very lively and friendly club, situated within, the Community Life Mag distribution area, New members would be made very welcome, and would settle in very quickly and enjoy playing bowls, perhaps .petanque or joining in with the other events which are in place.
