How to maintain physical fitness at a pace to suit you

EXERCISE: Physical exercise is any bodily activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health and wellness.

Being lazy. It’s easy isn’t it – getting up… living your day… eating…. going to bed…. and repeating. But what about the repercussions of the lack of physical activity? Illness, increased weight, susceptibility to injury, lethargy as well as hidden dangers that are not so visible – such as increases in blood pressure and higher cholesterol to name a few.

As the Studio Manager at Fitness First in Bedford, I take absolute joy in seeing people exercising – and enjoying it! Something I hear from members of the club regularly, is that they have fun when working out. If you are a member of a quality health club such as Fitness First, you have the benefit of having highly skilled group fitness instructors who live and breathe exercise, and love teaching fitness classes such as Bodycombat, Bodypump, Spin, Aqua, Zumba, Legs Bums and Tums, Yoga, Pilates… and the list goes on! Every group fitness instructor delivers classes at the club because they ALL work hard on their own personal development too – putting in many unseen hours of learning choreography, going on courses and planning classes in order to deliver an amazing 45 minute or 1 hour experience to you – whether you are a fitness pro, or have never done a class before. Classes are suitable for everyone.

So – exercise can only be done in a gym? Not at all.

The Bedford area has some fantastic parks and riverside walks which you can walk, cycle, run, or even dance along! The question is not where you do it, but how it affects your body. The official guidance on how much exercise an adult aged 18-65 should do, as recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine, is to accumulate at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity 5 days per week OR engage in 20-minutes of vigorous activity 3 days per week.

How about starting at home? There is a wide range of home based work outs that you can engage in, such as Insanity, traditional home aerobics and Lesmills Combat. These will certainly make you feel worked out, whilst in the privacy of your own home. What many people find, is that when they start the health-habit at home, they want more! By moving your home workout to exercising with a group, it becomes FUN! – and if it becomes a fun activity, then you are more likely to make a life changing switch from a sedentary lifestyle, to one filled with feel good fitness!

If you are in the club and see me around, please feel free to talk to me about group fitness and how, or what may suit you!
