Last chance to see Hairspray! Tonight and tomorrow at Milton Keynes theatre

On Monday night, full of Spring optimism, I took my seat and patiently waited for the cast of this well known film and musical to attempt to entertain and convince me that Hairspray was indeed, my cup of tea.

Hairspray is a musical based on the 1988 film of the same name which starred Divine and Ricki Lake by cult filmmaker John Waters. Having seen the original film many moons ago, I recalled it being enjoyable with a back story involving racial segregation in the early 60’s in Baltimore, America and  Tracy Turnblad; a girl on a mission to follow her dreams and dance her way onto national television – but I wasn’t sure how the story would translate on stage.

My apprehension was soon blown away as the bright colours of the 60’s, complete with beehive haircuts, high fringes and slick costumes, filled my optical senses with an array of intensity!

The singing was powerful, faultless and inspiring. Claire Sweeney, TV and stage actress and presenter Claire Sweeney (Educating Rita, Guys and Dolls) and Olivier Award nominated actor and much-loved Blue Peter presenter Peter Duncan were superb in their roles.  Claire plays Velma,  the evil Victorian control freak in charge of the fictional TV show setting in the Musical, and Peter plays Wilbur; the go lucky, glass half full Father of the star of the show. Both gave outstanding and very credible performances.

The Supernova of the show for me however, was Mattew Rixon who played Edna, mother of Tracy Turnblad, whose presence, comical timing and larger than life frame had the audience in stitches throughout the show.

A warm feel good vivid Musical which makes you stomp your feet, tap your fingers and sing out loud and proud to a host of addictive tracks.  A well-deserved standing ovation from the audience at the end and a thoroughly great night enjoyed by all!

So get out your gum, stiffen up your hair and get down to a swing your pants to a feast of fun that is Hairspray!!
