Goodnight Mister Tom – wake up to a gloriously, life-affirming modern children’s classic

The Olivier award-winning Chichester Festival Theatre production of Michelle Magorian’s wonderfully uplifting tale, Goodnight Mister Tom, returns to Milton Keynes Theatre from 1 – 5 Mar.

Starring David Troughton (FYI: if you’re an Archers’ addict, he plays Tony in the long-running radio soap) this revival comes fresh from a successful and critically acclaimed winter season in the West End.

During the dangerous build up to the Second World War young William Beech, a scruffy, undernourished and abused little scrap of a thing, is evacuated to the idyllic Dorset countryside.

Foisted on the outwardly grumpy (but yes, he does have a heart of gold) elderly recluse Tom Oakley, the pair forge a remarkable and heart-warming friendship.

Tom, whose grief for the loss of his wife and baby son years before is still as raw as it ever was and William, whose desperate home circumstances have cowed him into terrified submissiveness, find peace and happiness together as their relationship deepens and they both start to enjoy life again.

That is until William is suddenly summoned by his mother back to London…

David Wood has skilfully translated this children’s modern classic from page to stage while Robert Innes Hopkins’ design works equally well as a nostalgic glimpse back into the cosy countryside innocence of the 1940s or the grim poverty of Blitz-hit South London.

Though full of emotional depth Goodnight Mister Tom does not flout the wartime ration with a sugar rush of mawkish sentimentality. However, if you’ve got heart-strings prepare to have them tugged…
