A night of your favourite sing-a-long songs of ABBA!
MAMMA MIA! is Judy Craymer’s ingenious vision of staging the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs with an enchanting tale of family and friendship unfolding on a Greek island paradise.
Heroine Donna Sheridan lives as a free spirit love dream on a Greek Island with her daughter Sophie after a broken heart from one of the the leading men, Sam, many years ago.
When Sophie decides to get married, she wants to know who her father is. Naturally.
The problem is her mother isn’t sure! Is it Bill, is it Sam or is it Harry?
So she invites all of them to the wedding in the hope of knowing when she sees them who will be the one to walk her down the aisle. But it was never going to be that easy!
Here begins a tale of song, confusion, amusement and past heartbreak (headache?!) ending of course in a happy ever after but not the one you may have expected!
Some of the songs are a bit static with a mannequin effect in place that seems to contradict the joy of the music and possibly making those songs a little dull – but when the choreography and dancing does get going, it’s fabulous fun. The introduction to both halves with the music clips was a little long but aside from that it was a stunning show all round and one not to miss!
Gillian Hardy was fantastic and my favourite in the show – full of fun and a real sense of Julie Walters in the character – would love to have seen more of her. The whole cast seemed to really enjoy it and probably the best part of all was the end! In terms of the cast getting everyone on their feet lapping and dancing for 3 rousing Abba songs!
The full touring cast includes Helen Hobson (Donna Sheridan), Gillian Hardie (Rosie), Emma Clifford (Tanya), Alex Bourne (Sam Carmichael), Jamie Hogarth (Harry Bright), Christopher Hollis (Bill Austin), Lucy May Barker (Sophie Sheridan), Phillip Ryan (Sky), Fia Houston-Hamilton (Ali), Blaise Colangelo (Lisa), Louis Stockil (Pepper) and Brad Veitch (Eddie) will star in the production from Monday 13 February 2017.
With music & lyrics by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus, MAMMA MIA! is written by Catherine Johnson, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast. The production is designed by Mark Thompson, with lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound design by Andrew Bruce & Bobby Aitken, and musical supervision, additional material & arrangements by Martin Koch.
