Top Technology Trends in 2015

2015 is in full swing. Every year, and more so with the added influence of the internet, phrases, terms and expressions are created for new phenomenon. If you jump on the bandwagon early enough you just might see some benefits to your personal and work life.

So get your geek on and take a look at top seven predicted tech trends here:

 

  1. The Alternet

The alternet is the alternative to the mainstream and regulated internet. It is community run and members take control of their own data and input. The internet as it is, offers a largely unregulated platform. The dark net in contrast is unregulated with no accountability. As people demand more control, we could start to see the alternet emerge, which is in public control, cooperatively owned and focused on privacy. It is predicted that the ‘alternet’ will take over from the mainstream internet in years to come as people take control of their identity and personal data. It sounds like a great idea but with stricter data rules there is a lot more to think about when marketing your company.

  1. Anonymous Apps

While the alternet addresses the need for more control, there is conversely also a rise in the demand for anonymity online and freedom of expression. Apps such Whisper, Mustache and Secret share content, ask questions, expect honest feedback and offer complete anonymity. Often highly personal and sharing secrets, the rise of these types of apps is set to continue.

Total freedom of speech or an excuse for trolls?

  1. Beacons

Beacons are small stickers that hold data and transmit information to your smart phone, or device. It gives the user information about their surroundings. These beacons can be used commercially and personally. For example: stick a beacon to your bicycle to track the distance you ride or when your bike is moved from a locked position. Attach a beacon to a shop display product and it will transmit messages to smart phones in the locality promoting special offers.

Messages are being sent to us 24/7, how will be cut through the noise and get client messages to target audiences? It is becoming harder and harder.

  1. Creative Computing

In essence this is using technology in a more human way. Data is collected, fed back, collated and learnt from so the computer builds its own mind.

An example is IBM Watson, a creative computer, was tested against a contestant on the American TV show Jeopardy! The quiz questions are full of puns, slang and jargon that a google search perhaps would not be able to decipher, whereas Watson is made up of real life occurrences like the human brain. It used processes to understand clues in questions and responded to questions in just 3 seconds winning the game.

  1. Early Onset Nostalgia

New apps such as ‘Timehop’ on social media allows users to check back on their relatively recent status updates of only a few years ago making nostalgia a much more recent phenomenon. The time it takes for people to be nostalgic is compressing as technology moves so fast. It’s hard to even remember a time before mobile phone cameras and broadband!

  1. White walling

We are all in charge of our own digital brand or persona. White walling refers to deleting posts from social media feeds like Facebook or Twitter that allows you to control your personal brand online and portray the desired image.

The general consensus is that we want more control of our own personas in technology. While we want control of who sees our data, what it is worth, and restrictions on the information we receive we also want to manipulate the information we release to give our preferred way of portraying ourselves.

Branding is now big business! What you portray socially determines the messages you receive, eg: what you follow and like on twitter dictates the messages that appear on your news feed.
